“We can do nothing to achieve salvation, BUT [ we must be righteous and obey ].” This statement implies that if we are NOT righteous and obedient, we could lose our salvation. Is that true?
This may sound correct because it has been either spoken or implied off and on for centuries.
This Statement is a Complete Contradiction!
I will point out right now that this statement is a complete contradiction! If we can do nothing to achieve salvation, then we can do nothing to lose it either. That is because it wasn’t our doing in the first place.
The problem here is that the word DO, is speaking of actions and thoughts that a person does.
If any human could gain or lose their salvation, or become righteous through completing a set of works, then Jesus came and died for no reason.
Jesus Said it, Solomon Said it, the Apostle Paul Said it
So, if the Bible states clearly that we can do nothing to achieve salvation by our actions or works, then why are we still saying that we MUST obey God?
Hear this. I am not talking about whether we SHOULD obey, or whether it is RIGHT to obey God, or that we do not gain anything by obeying God. What I am saying is that we could not achieve total obedience to God on our own, even if we tried forever.
So maybe we need to change our approach.
There is One Thing Required of Us to Receive Salvation
There is only one thing we are required to do to receive salvation, and that is to acknowledge that we are sinners, believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He came to earth and died to save us from the penalty of sin.
That decision is all that is required to receive eternal life. Jesus has covered it all, because He knew that if anything was left up to us, we would mess it up again.
We Imply That Jesus Didn’t Do Enough
When we imply that obedience is required to remain saved, we imply that Jesus didn’t do enough. He didn’t accomplish everything, so we have to pick up the slack by our obedience.
The good news is that Jesus DID do enough, and not just enough. He accomplished more than enough! He did it ALL!
Understanding the Love of Jesus Leads to a Christ-like Life
Now I can almost hear your thoughts at this point. “Is Trinity really saying that we can sin as much as we want, because we don’t have to worry about the consequences of sin anymore?”
First of all, why are you thinking that way? Does knowing that you cannot lose your salvation because our God demonstrated perfect love for you insight you to sin?
No. It doesn’t. When you truly understand the fullness and completeness of what Jesus did for you out of nothing but pure love, you will want to become more like Christ, not more like the devil.
Allow the Love of God to do It’s Work.
This is the truth of the gospel, and we don’t need to soften it or harden it. We just need to share it with the world, and allow the love of God to do its work.
Many questions still remain, however. Here are a couple of them.
Are there still earthly consequences to sin?
If our actions cannot save us or condemn us, do any of our actions mean anything?
The answers coming next week.
For now remember…. The love of Jesus is mind blowing! His gift is overwhelming! He is the answer to our sin problem! It is not about us! It is ALL about Him!
