Where is the line drawn that separates a need from a desire? Do you need a new vehicle, an old vehicle? Perhaps you think you need food, water, or clothing.
Ask the Questions
It can all be answered by asking a few questions about what happened to God’s most loyal and trusted servants in the bible.
As we answer these simple questions, we can deduce that anything they lost was not a true need. So let’s get to the questions.
First, did any of God’s greatest servants lose their clothing? Yes. Did any of them lose their homes? Yes. Did any encounter physical discomfort, lost freedom, loss of health, or heartache? Yes, yes, and yes to all.
From these questions, we can see a few things that are not needs, but we have not yet answered the question. Where is the line?
All we need to do is go one step deeper. Did they lose their very breath?
The answer is yes! In fact, many of them not only lost the breath of life in them, but lost it in extremely uncomfortable and terrible ways.
So there is your answer. Don’t see it? It is clear because there is only one thing that none of them lost, and that is the only thing that we NEED!
The one thing that we cannot do without is God! Everything beyond that, even the very breath we take every second, is just a blessing. Not one thing above that is a true need! No! Not one thing!
Applying This in Your Life
Take a moment to think about what you are striving to attain. Striving for money, recognition, pleasure, or success in other areas of our life will consume all your time.
It doesn’t matter how much you attain, you always feel you NEED a little more. This is where you can apply what you’ve learned today.
Just look up and thank God for the very breath you breath. Acknowledge to Him that everything you are striving to get are just physical desires and not needs.
Strengthen Your Self Worth
The reason you always feel that you need a little more is because you are attempting to feel good about yourself striving for material things. In other words, you are trying to achieve greater self worth.
When all of the material items are recognized as non-needs, you realize how futile it is to attempt to get self worth by attaining more of them. None of this is tied to how much you have. You may have millions or live in poverty. It a realization that you can live by regardless of your station.
Remember, the only thing you NEED is God. He is where all your worth comes from, and His love is NOT tied to anything you do. He will never stop loving you, regardless of what you do.
When you apply this to your life, things stop mattering as much as they used to. The days will become less stressful.
Joy will be easier to attain, because it is no longer tied to your physical non-needs.
Even if you lose a few dollars today, you now understand that it was not something you needed in the first place.
