If you don’t even believe there is a God then you may need to read this post first.
The beginning of the Christian and Islamic Muslim war with each other goes back in time to long before Christ died on the cross. All the way back to the time of Abraham in the bible, the Muslims got their start from a man named Ishmael. Of course, they weren’t technically Muslims until the time of Muhammad the prophet, but to understand them a little, you need to go back to the origins of the people themselves. I am going to paraphrase the bible here, but if you want to read about it yourself you can do so here.
Abraham was getting old, up in his eighties, and God had promised him and his wife Sarah, that they would have a child. All her long life, Sarah had been barren, having no children. She got it in her head that her having a child herself was an impossibility because of her advanced age. Sarah had a maidservant who was an Egyptian named Hagar. Instead of waiting for God to fulfill what he had promised, Sarah decided to take matters inter her own hands. She gave Hagar to her husband Abraham to be his wife.
To make this a little clearer, this wasn’t a strife free arrangement. As soon as Hagar got pregnant, she started feeling like she was above Sarah. I picture it as she was feeling a little self righteous because she could get pregnant and Sarah couldn’t. So Hagar started being mean in some way to Sarah (personally, I can’t imagine women doing this to each other). Sarah complained to Abraham and he told her to do whatever she wanted to because, after all, Hagar was still her servant.
After getting this release from her husband, Sarah was extremely harsh and probably not very nice to Hagar. So mean was she that Hagar felt she couldn’t take it anymore and ran away.
At this point, you may be thinking that I am writing some drama or something and it all sounds very petty, but just take a moment to think about your own family and you will see that this is just life. The reason that I am covering this is to really show the situation that Islamic Muslims started from.
In a desert, God came to Hagar and told her to go back to Abraham and to put up with the crap that she was getting from Sarah. He also told her that she would have a son and that she should name him Ishmael. The next thing that God told her is a key piece in the puzzle to the strife that has always been between Christian and Muslim. God told her that “I’m going to give you a big family, children past counting. From this pregnancy, you’ll get a son: Name him Ishmael; for God heard you, God answered you. He’ll be a bucking bronco of a man, a real fighter, fighting and being fought, Always stirring up trouble, always at odds with his family.”
This is a revealing prophecy. This is the man that the entire arab world and eventually the Islamic Muslims descended from. A real fighter, always stirring up trouble and always at odds with his family (meaning the Jewish people and by extension, through Jesus Christ, the Christians). We know now what kind of a man Ishmael was going to be, but lets look a little further into his personal circumstances.
Hagar came back and Ishmael was born as the son of a very wealthy person, Abraham. In that time Abraham was kind of a wanderer, but he was very wealthy. When Ishmael was 13 years old, his half brother was born. His name was Isaac, the chosen heir of Abraham and the son of Sarah. Later on, when Sarah saw Ishmael picking on her son Isaac, she asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away.
What a tough thing to do. Abraham asked God and God told Abraham that it was ok to do what Sarah wanted and so Hagar and Ishmael were sent out on their own, which I am sure, didn’t endear Isaac to Ishmael very much. Here he was the privileged son of a wealthy man and then when this other kid comes along and gets everything, plus gets his mother and Ishmael banished. Not a good start.
Ishmael became a mighty man and had many sons, he even came back to help his brother Isaac bury their father Abraham when he died. And then the bible says this: “Ishmael lived 137 years. When he breathed his last and died he was buried with his family. His children settled down all the way from Havilah near Egypt eastward to Shur in the direction of Assyria. The Ishmaelites didn’t get along with any of their kin.”
This is the story that many people may not know relates to the Islamic Muslims and the Christians and how they started out in the world with strife and a prophecy that has followed them all the way to the present day.
